Hornby and the surrounding area Nestled in the heart of the Lune Valley, the historic village of Hornby was once part of a thriving coaching route to Scotland. The fine Georgian buildings that line Hornby’s main street are a testament to its prosperous past, whilst the lofty edifice of the village’s 11th-Century Castle are a reminder of the sweeping views bestowed upon the village from all directions. Surrounded by some of the most stunning scenery in the North of England, Hornby is a haven of tranquility and rural delights, nestled between the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales.
Roman roads, now ramblers pathways; sketchy remains of Viking settlements; historic churches and unspoilt villages; and into the Dales, the Settle to Carlisle Victorian Railway, are a flavour of what you will find. Combined with its tumbling streams and wooded valleys, this is the landscape that inspired the great English painter JMW Turner in the 1800’s, and became immortalised in Charlotte Bronte’s novel Jane Eyre. A sanctuary for walkers, photographers and artists, and strewn with the finest country pubs, you can be as active or as inactive as you like. If all this is not enough simply slip across the counties’ border to the dramatic Lakeland Fells. Although Hornby itself is a haven of peace and quiet visitors will find the historic City of Lancaster and the market town of Kirkby Lonsdale are just a short drive away. Stagecoach operates a bus service through Hornby.
